DISCOVER SOME OF our science ROAD SCHOOLING HIGHLIGHTS…..

Roadschooling our children each week has allowed us to seek out new travel/education or adventure opportunities across Europe. So if you’re considering planning your own road trip or just adding something educational to an extended family holiday, we hope it gives offers ideas for educational family fun across Europe.

SO WHY DO WE BELIEVE IT IS IMPORTANT?

Learning Science can nurture curiosity, can satisfy some of that yearning to understand why the world operates as it does. Science gives our children a methodology to turn native curiosity into knowledge. It gives them  the power and possibility of invention, of finding solutions to current and future problems.

The Science of Today is the Technology of Tomorrow...- Edward Teller

WHAT ARE WE HOPING TO ACHIEVE?

Allowing our children to explore the science that is around them , allows them to experiment with simple, understandable science. To understand green issues now will help them make sense of future decisions. Further developing problem solving skills, awareness of technology and the need to conserve natural resources

LOCATION
EVALUATING EVIDENCE
  • Take a tour of the 'Loch Ness Exhibition Centre' , evaluate evidence on likelihood of a 'Nessie' being alive
  • Compare scientific processes used to try to discover 'Nessie'
  • Develop a clear view on whether 'Nessie' could be real or not
Loch Ness, Scotland
SCIENCE & INVENTION
  • Tour the 'Leonardo da Vinci' museum and describe the variety of inventions attributed to Leonardo da Vinci
  • Evaluate which ones have made a significant impact on society since their invention
  • Test practical model, create video blog to explain workings on key Leonard da Vinci inventions
Leonardo da Vinci Museum, Florence
MARINE BIOLOGY
  • Using the guided tour through the Shark Exhibition, explain why sharks need to be conserved not eradicated
  • Evaluate the differing species of sharks and why this may be so
  • Explore the myth of how dangerous sharks really are to us
  • Explore using 'Touch/See' pools to appreciate Denmark's local sealife
  • Explore tropical adaptations of animals in Rainforest section
DenBlaa Planet Aquarium, Denmark
SCIENCE & INVENTION
  • Using the practical model of Archimedes Screw, explain how water can be transported uphill
  • Describe why this may be important and to who
  • (If time, explore other practical models & what is Frogspawn)
Stubai Glacier, Austria
 TECHNOLOGY
  • Visit the Oslo Teknisk Museum, and visit the energy section
  •  Describe the increasing sophistication of technology now in modern use -  wind power, wave power, HEP power
  • Evaluate (using practical models) how light refraction occurs, how a wind tunnel shows displacement of air, how levers were used to build, what exactly is a whirlpool
Norsk Teknisk Museum, Oslo
UNDERSTAND THE PERIODIC TABLE
  • Taking a trip down the 24km railway into the Postojna Caves, explore what science can be found underground
  • Describe the formation of cave geology & Karst landscapes
  • Seek out 5 pieces of evidence that cave dwellers have adapted to life underground (i.e baby dragons)
  • Understand basic use of Periodic Table i.e Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) or Iron Oxide (Fe203)
Postojna Caves, Slovenia
ENERGY SOURCES
  • Develop an understanding of forces through practical model making (rubber band cars)
  • Describe how a mini steam engine works and is it green energy
  • Build and Compare the energy sources behind powering a Hovercraft, Helicopter, Steam Engine
Pinner, Middlesex
OPTICAL ILLUSIONS & SCIENCE BEHIND IT
  • Learn how a Camera Obscura works and then visit Edinburgh's Camera Obscura
  • Choose a particular illusions and describe how it has been created, and could it be created back in the motorhome
  • Discover how the human eye can be fooled by illusions
Edinburgh, Scotland
MARINE BIOLOGY
  • Taking opportunity to snorkel under the water to personally explore marine biology across Europe. Listing all species seen.
  •  Take videos to compare the differing underwater environments and describe how it alters
  • Research how dolphins interact in their own environment (seen in Gibraltar and Trogir, Croatia and in Flam, Norway)
Gibraltar, Spain, Croatia, Norway
UNDERSTAND GENETICS
  • Take videos /pictures to compare the differing snail cases that can be found at a snail farm
  • Research how genetics affect snails and compare this to human genetics and eye colour
Comines, France
