SO WHY DO WE BELIEVE IT IS IMPORTANT?

At a time when 52% of England voted to conclude their long standing links with the European Union we remain fully committed in ensuring our young daughters do not share this insular point of view.... We fully intend to bring up our daughters as outward looking global citizens who share a love for the languages, variety and cultural uniqueness of each country across Europe. Not forgetting that speaking more than one language increases your brain capacity and you have better memory too.

The limits of my language means the limits of my world.

Ludwig Wittgenstein

WHAT ARE WE HOPING TO ACHIEVE?

We'd like the girls to fall in love with the learning of languages. we believe just English is not enough! It's really important that they learn to speak and understand other people no matter where they are from. Allowing them to travel to new places around the world and confidently meet new people and discover new cultures
When they become young adults, speaking more languages should really makes them stand out from the crowd. It's often forgotten that you also develop those 4 key skills; listening, reading, speaking and writing. But more importantly it's fun learning about a wide range of topics from shopping, to sport, to food and entertainment and then having the confidence to try these out when abroad

SO HOW DO WE APPROACH THIS?

Differing from the other subjects taught, we have prioritised the learning of literacy skills, mathematics and languages on a daily basis. Both girls complete a series of daily languages exercises via the app (Duolingo). This App both motivates and inspires both girls.... they really love the chance to listen, speak and write the answers... gaining confidence to try out phrases or words with a variety of people they meet on this trip. In addition, we often use Google Translate to help encourage the girls to make friends with other children they meet at campsites. We believe its not only polite, but also essential that they retain some basic phrases across the languages learnt.... already Spanish, French and Italian appear to be their most favoured languages... but there's plenty of time and other countries to change that!!!

  • Using Duolingo, we try to complete two family and one individual exercise every other day - roughly 9-10 question per exercise...
  • The regular updates show exactly how 'literate' each girls is - causing much discussion in the motorhome as the girls surge from 7% to 8%!!!!
  • The Duolingo App allows both girls to save their progress and switch languages which can be beneficial as we cross so many borders in this journey
