So what else is there in Pembrokeshire apart from the Bluestone Wales Resort?

But before we left Pembrokeshire for the next leg of our ‘UK Cities Tour’  we’d planned to visit Britain’s smallest city in St David’s in Pembrokeshire!

Leaving Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire proved harder than we thought!! Both girls have loved the activities on offer whilst the luxury of the lodge accommodation has proved a real change from spending  450+ days living in a motorhome across Europe.  But we’ve loved finding fun & quirky travel destinations and activities for families whilst ensuring we road school our two daughters at the same time…… So the time had come to leave Bluestone Wales!

If you’ve kept up with our travels on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, you’ll know that the girls have been lucky this week with their road schooling. Grabbing the opportunity to see landscape artist (Louise Collis) painting the unbelievably pretty Barafundle Bay. Whilst today, we got a photography masterclass from Andrew Warren who offered a unique slant on rural life in Pembrokeshire. As you may know Lottie has developed a real love for photography and has had some great success with her Geirangerfjord (Norway) & Valley of the Temples (Sicily)… so this was a brilliant ‘road schooling’ opportunity which she grabbed with both hands!
So after much discussion and advice on how to compose the best coastal scenery, Lottie focused on the chance to capture the refracted waves from the harbour side gates… Hoping for a bird or shaft of light to make the picture even more special, Lottie was pleased to achieve the above ‘end result’ but we’ll have to wait to see Andrew’s effort to find out how successful she’s been!

Heading south from Porthgain, we headed into New Gale, perhaps one of the prettiest beaches on this stretch of coastline but certainly one favoured by surfers and families who all love the rolling waves and 2 mile long sandy beach!!

But Pembrokeshire has a jewel that simply has to be explored… the ‘chocolate box’ pretty city of St David’s is something not to be missed… If you love a good cathedral, then St David’s has one to rival those seen on our recent visits to Exeter, York, Lincoln & Durham. But it’s worth seeing the Bishop’s Palace, contemplate a Boat Trip excursion or simply stroll down the winding streets to grab a quick coffee… a welcome lunchtime spot!!
But there are other similar villages with amazing locations… Perhaps our pick was Solva! With its bright, colourful houses nestled into an estuary that would rival any of those we’ve seen in places like Portugal, Cornwall or even Northumberland.

There are also castles a plenty in Wales… with over 17 to choose from in Pembrokeshire alone… But if you can, then narrow it down to these Top 6 Castles in Pembrokeshire. All worth a look but especially Pembroke Castle which has special significance due to the royal birth within its walls… you can even stay in these castles too (try Rock Castle – seen in the above picture)

But we’ll leave our best tip to last… a trip to the Blue Lagoon! Nestled into the rolling hills around Abereidy… the Blue Lagoon was recently featured in ITV”s ‘Tales from the Coast‘ series. In an episode that saw Robson Green (presenter) leap into the brilliantly ‘green’ lake from the 8m high rock platforms.. .. It’s completely unspoilt. Features a brilliant coastal walk and would be one of our favourite places across Europe so far! Not bad when you consider what it’s up against – (Click here for – Our Top 10 Highlights from Across Europe)

So when you combine all of the above with the fantastic Bluestone Wales National Park Resort and its amazing collection of nearby beaches including Barafundle Bay, Freshwater West & Broadhaven south (see below)…

It’s easy to see why we’ve fallen in love with Pembrokeshire and can’t wait to return to see it in early summer later this year…. but as ever, we need to move on, so Birmingham beckons in the morning!
