Returning to enjoy Valencia…by bike!
The best part of any road trip is the ability to pick and choose your destinations.. so having thoroughly enjoyed our quick visit to Valencia last year, we’re back to find out what more this wonderful city on the eastern Spanish coastline can offer…but this time by bike!
Using metro/trains to allow quick and easy access into the city from our convenient overnight destination at Valencia Camper Park. Even easier if you take advantage of the Valencia Card(24hr,48hr or 72hr).. brilliant as it both covers public transport costs but also offers an amazing array of reduce cost of free attractions plus plenty more
Situated to the north of the city near Betera… we studied the fantastic tourist maps from the Valencia Tourist Office and plotted a course to try to include the amazing dry river bed of the old River Turia… packed full of new architectural wonders, green parkland and amazing leisure facilities… it’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon… Just remember that the metro only allows access to Valencia by bike on weekends but you can take them to overground stations (we chose the metro stop at Turia to get the best access to the river bed)
There really is brilliant access via these metro lines, they are quick, reliable and so easy to use that it reminded us of our biking experiences in Copenhagen as we journeyed to the Den Blaa Aquarium. There are over 18 routes courtesy of the Metro Valencia and there’s plenty to do once you get into the city… it’s easy Mediterranean climate just demands an outdoors, active lifestyle… so be prepared to get busy when you visit Valencia
The central belt or Garden of Turia that we opted to explore has been extensively redeveloped since 1957’s flooding and offers some truly inspiring architectural sights… from the amazing City of Arts and Sciences and Valencian Music Palace which can be found at the easternmost end of the garden… or the Oceanographic centre which beggars belief in it’s size and intricate construction…. just check out these maps before you leave as there’s over 120 hectares to explore
Perhaps the best part of this Garden is the variety of sporting opportunities that both girls loved watching… from Girls Rugby which had Lottie’s avid attention to the baseball game or girl’s football matches… Throw into that an adventure playground based on Gullivers Kingdom which could enter younger kids for hours… and you have the perfect place to get active! all the better for the beautiful water features, palm tree lined gardens and bright blue sky & sunshine… in November!!
So with the UK hunkering down for their version of the Danish ‘hygge‘ . A phrase brought to our attention by a great audio book that has helped our descent south/north/east and west across Europe – ‘Living Life Danishly by Helen Russell‘… we’re embracing the Spanish winter by taking every opportunity we can to add to our Family Adventures and Experiences… truly the best part of taking this ‘Round Europe’ Family Roadtrip… one we are so lucky to get the chance to enjoy together!
