Syracuse had always been on our list due to its historic significance as one of ancient greeks most famous cities. Rising out of the citrus lined fields, it is positively brimming with history and glorious golden buildings that match perfectly the azure blue sea below… this walled city has long held the hearts of those who have occupied it… and its not hard to see why…

Allied with no lesser tribes than the Spartan and Corinthians, it held sway over the politics of Magna Gracie for many years…. now a UNESCO site it is easy to see why Archimedes and Plato fell in love with Syracuse…

After arriving at the free parking in the main port just before the bridge into the ancient narrow streets of the island of Ortigya… we surveyed the scene… could we stay here and enjoy the glorious sunshine… perhaps just an hour staring at the many fishermen painting they boats the classic Greek ‘fishing blue’… or should we bike again??
Thankfully the bikes won the vote, and we headed off along the walled city and its narrow ‘one way’ streets… I have to admit, we may have broken the Sicilian highway code as we headed the wrong way down many a one way street – but judging by those around us in cars, bikes or even a bus!!!! we weren’t alone!!!!

We stared in amazement at the sheer beauty of the coastal waters – crystal clear and seemingly endless in their beauty – before heading to the Fountain of Arthesua and the Temple of Apollo…

Sadly we couldn’t spare much more than an afternoon here, but if we return, this will command at least 3-4 days, it really is that special… lunchtimes overlooking the Ionian sea, boat cruises, the aquarium could easily occupy us… or even just a stroll down the myriad of streets with their mini markets and Sicilian lemonade stands… It’s official, LifeinourVan loved Syracuse!!!!!!
