A Campsite with it’s own Cable Car, no wonder Tiroler Zugspitze is Austria’s #1 Campsite

If you’ve stayed at this spectacular campsite near the Tiroler Zugspitze in Austria, you’ll know it’s set in a truly scenic mountainous locatio. With direct access to its very own cable car! It’s a special Leading Campings campsite gem not to be missed….

So with Austria treating us to an Alpine Pass on the Gerlos Alpine Road (see full blog here) and a chance to hike up the Stubai Glacier (see full blog here), we’ve moved across to the Tiroler region of Austria…. and a chance to stay at a campsite with its own cable car at Tiroler Zugspitze! So not the normal facilities you might find at a campsite, but then again nor was the Volcano at Camping Solfatara in Naples, Italy (see full blog here). But read on to find out just why this campsite is rightfully the best campsite in Austria

Priced sensibly, the Zugspitze Cable Car sits just under Germany’s highest mountain and only a few hundred metres from our spacious, well equiped camping pitch. For anyone staying at the campsite, you benefit from a discounted price alongside numerous other benefits including local free public transport (courtesy of your complimentary keycard to the Zugspitz Arena).

Regular followers of our website will know we all love cable cars (see our posts on Pic du Midi (Spain), Mont Blanc (France) or Ulriken (Norway)) but today was a full on ‘Roadschooling Day‘ so we left it to the girl’s grandparents to take a trip up, but more of that later on….

Firstly, it’s a truly beautiful route up to the campsite… past alpine flowers in summer, but we reckon equally spectacular in winter (see this link for more) but it’s probably the most spectacular campsite view we’ve seen in over 500+ days on the road across Europe. As a family, we always seem to head for the coastal campsites, but for an active family, this is truly an outdoor playground to match any other we’ve seen.. Packed full of hiking trails, mountain bike trails and ski routes (88 lifts, 209km of slopes & 110km of cross country ski trails)

Every campsite should have Something special

But as ever, it has that ‘Leading Campings‘ quality that the girl’s grandparents are starting to recognise as being a real help to the overall holiday. The quality of their shower block & ‘open to all’ kitchen area would shame some large hotel chains we’ve stayed in. They really are truly 5-star and certainly comparable with the best we’d seen so far at Camping Krk Resort in Croatia.

Something for everyone… Even a cable car ride!

In 2016 the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car celebrated its 90th anniversary, and it looks like a new cable car route is planned to open soon (taking 100 passengers per cable car!). So it looks like more people will get to see the top of Zugspitze. According to the girl’s grandparents, it’s well worth a visit to the Erlebniswelt Zugspitze, a small musuem at the top of the mountain all about the geography, geology and history of the Zugspitze. Whilst we’d love to be there on the night of the 21st June when they light fires on the summits and ridge of the Zugspitze. In fact you can even stand astride Austria & Germany at the top as the Zugspitzhaus hut marks the border between Bavarian Germany and Austrian Tirol.

For us, its been a brilliant couple of days and enough to make us certain we want to return again soon… perhaps this time with our ski boots in the garage of our Adria Motorhome rather than the bikes!

Tiroler

so where did we park the bus for the night?
