How to spend 48hrs of Family Fun on Ile de Ré in France

With our travels across Europe allowing us the opportunity to compare and contrast some amazing places…. from the Dalmatian Coastline in Croatia to the very heart of Spain in Andalusia.. we’d rank Ile de Re pretty high alongside these amazing destinations…

So imagine holidays spent jumping into the sub-tropical pool for yet another splash around with the kids or evenings enjoying the numerous activities/shows on offer for all ages.  All this in an idyllic setting amongst palm trees and flowers….. the perfect recipe for some rest and relaxation!!
Maybe its the miles of endless family friendly cycle paths or the smell of fresh fruit from the morning markets in each of the 10 idyllic villages… villages that dramatically alter across the island offering endless afternoons of exploring… just perfect for young children!

So why is it such a great destination for kids?

With so many activities to tire out those energetic limbs… it’s hard to pick our favourites.. we loved taking a SUP paddleacross the salt marshes just as much as learning to body board on the wide expanse of beach at Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré… but perhaps our favourite means to burn off some excess energy came on two wheels… across immaculate cycle paths past colourful vineyards, tasting the salty air of the oyster farms or salt marshes and even climbing into a real lighthouse!

You can even check out where you fancy spending your next family picnic on Ile de Re – using their virtual website!!

And for the Grandparents?

There really is something for everyone on Ile de Ré as we’ve found taking both our girls and their grandparents this time… from old ruined churches to delicious ice creams in St. Martin-de-Ré… from the colourful marinas of Ars-en-Ré to St.Martin-de-Ré to afternoon’s spent lazing around the shops of the winding streets of La Flotte.

But there’s so much more to enjoy…. from sailing schools to jet ski hire… to the world’s only sea urchin breeding centre. For nature lovers you’ll be amazed by the bird reserves… History buffs will love the retelling of the island’s unique maritime history in the museum in St.Martin-de-Ré… whilst outdoor enthusiasts have miles of beach/coastlines to explore!!!

We can’t wait to return… it may be a small island, yet it still packs a real punch!
