Predjama Castle A gravity defying castle
Predjama’s Castle is both a picturesque and probably impregnable castle perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-metre high cliff for more than 700 years at Predjama Castle . Its romantic appeal only further enhanced by the River Lokva, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle.
The superb audio guide gives clear information (suitable for both our girls and us alike) aptly describing the most famous of its inhabitants Erazem of Predjama, who is often likened to Robin Hood (a fact that resonated with both girls). Many legends are mentioned, whilst you can see a ‘Henry VIII – esque’ portrait of Erazem who perhaps uncomfortably (and unfittingly) eventually breathed his last breath while in the toilet (courtesy of a bitter servant and a large catapulted cannonball).
Predjama also holds the Guiness Wold record holder for the biggest cave castle in the World.
Both girls loved seeing this immediately after the caves…. the Kartst landscape giving rise to another type of settlement – this one provides the castle with hidden passageway into freedom (used during a prolonged siege by an Italian baron), a source of drinking water & an additional
shelter and a space for storing food.

It is well laid out and easy enough to access, although the girls need giant strides to get up the steps hewn into the natural rock…. the castle is highly atmospheric and has its own torture room which both girls gazed at in real amazement.
We were delighted to grab the opportunity to visit this castle and are pleased to add this to our unique castles list in LifeinourVan’s wall of fame… perhaps likening it to Palacio de la Pena(Sintra) for its originality.. again worth the visit!!!
