Leaving Sandbanks behind us, we've headed north to the relatively unknown quaint Hampshire village of Michelmersh. The small village in Hampshire some three miles north of Romsey is home to the impressive Michelmersh Silver Band. So where better to hear it in action first than during the Christingle service at the 12th century St Mary's Church.
For nearly 50 years Christingle has been a key part of celebrations within churches and schools, with the candlelit services a firm favourite with supporters of all ages. So it links well with our 'Christmas Roadschooling' theme this year that's seen us take the girls to Christmas Markets in France, England or Portugal or head for 'Christmas through the Decades' exhibitions at stately Homes (Castle Howard or Nunnington Hall)
Thankfully it lived up to our expectations and the excellently led service was accompanied by some resounding silver/brass sounds as the girls learnt more about the meaning behind the Christingle Globe (see here).
With more to follow the next evening at the Michelmersh Silver Band Christmas Concert.....
We'd first heard about the MichelMersh Silver Band (formed in 1886) when someone told us about a fantastic silver band that still parades around the village on Christmas Eve singing traditional carols by candlelit lanterns.... a truly quintessential English Christmas Scene to rival all others!!!
There's no record of the day the Michelmersh band first played together, but its first anniversary is reported in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal for Saturday, November 19, 1887......there's even a current member of the band whose family have had a member play in the band since 1887!!!
But as for the evening it proved to be a brilliant experience for the girls! Jam packed full of comic sketches, audience participation, carol singing and some brilliant music from this award winning silver/brass band!!
In fact, it was that good we even grabbed a copy of their 'Comfort and Joy' soundtrack too (possibly available via their website but we're not promising - http://www.msband.co.uk)
So what's next for us? Well, we're heading northwards to give the girls a chance to build their very own 'Dolls House'.... wish us luck!!
