Having experienced some fantastic sights on our European Roadtrip for over 500+ days now, we've also enjoyed celebrating festivals and special days in other countries. Loving the opportunity to see how different cultures/countries celebrate these days (i.e Hallowen in Spain or Bastille Day in France). So having seen how the Italians celebrated Easter last year in Catania, Sicily... we couldn't wait to see what Croatia would have in store for us this year....
So where better to compare Easter Experiences than on the spectacularly beautiful island of Krk at the Camping Resort Krk .... This brilliant 5* camping resort is the first of it's kind in Croatia and is similar to 'La Marina' in Alicante, Spain... So perhaps it's no surprise that it made it into Europe's premier 'Leading Campings' campsites! These brilliant campsites cater for pretty much every campers needs and we couldn't wait to spend the Easter weekend here after making our way north up the Croatian Coastline.
As Easter is understandably the holiest day of the year in Croatia. The preparations have been taking place across Croatia since Palm Sunday with many towns marking this with different ceremonies and processions every night. We'd recently left the coastal towns of Dalmatia, but we'd heard it wasn't unusual to see processions in traditional costumes and sing ancient hymns in the evenings. Whilst in central Croatia, villagers sometimes build huge bonfires known as krijes.... However our Easter Sunday started with our family tradition of an Easter Egg hunt... this time across the 'motorhome pitches' of ourselves and travelling companions (AussiesonTour)
After a feast of 'Australian Pancakes' mixed with Cadbury's Mini Eggs!! and the kind gift of a 'Pinca'' from Camping Resort Krk 's superb animation team leader (Monika), we met up with a number of other families to enjoy a walk to the city walls of Krk for an 'Easter Welcome' from the townsfolk. This scenic walk takes about 20mins past some of the best snorkelling bays we've seen across Croatia and also includes a unique sea colour change (from blue to vivid green) before you reach the impressive town walls
(For those of you who love to find out about local customs, a Pinca is a round fruit filled bread in the shape of a cake with a cross on it... if you like seeing how others celebrate customs, then check out our Obidos/Portugal Christmas blog post here too)
The ancient city walls hide some of the island's most valuable cultural and historical monuments.... and plenty of stone paved streets to wander down and explore... The main square (Vela Place) is easy to find and enjoys a renaissance style of architecture that is certainly easy on the eye!
With a number of fellow camping families making the trip from the campsite, we weren't sure what to expect, but the typically enthusiastic and welcoming reception by the local townsfolk was brilliant.... The girls were so lucky to receive traditional Croatian Easter gifts like the painted eggs (pisanice) above. Or to taste the interesting yet delicious local Easter foods. All of which had been blessed the night before ... a tradition that almost all of Croatia still follow.
After some time enjoying the sights of Krk including the 'Francopan' Fortress that dates back to the 12th Century, the site of the 'Large Town Doors', the site of the 5th Century Cathedral (or current 12th Century masterpiece) and the Gothic style bell tower... we relented and grabbed an ice cream for both girls to help with the walk back to the campsite...
The celebrations didn't finish on our return back to the campsite... the animation team were in overdrive and had planned a later 'Easter Egg' hunt across the entire campsite... For anyone reading this who doesn't usually use the 'animation services / kids club' we don't either... but the team at Camping Resort Krk were outstanding and soon we had the girls begging to join yet another activity... (if you're planning a visit with multiple ages, you'll be pleased to know they have purpose built areas for 3-7 & 7-12 age groups to allow everyone to enjoy the daily activiites)
With the sun setting on a fantastic Easter Day that more than matched last year's Sicilian Celebrations, the BBQ smoke was soon rising over the campsite... as we settled down to yet another enjoyable evening of cards/games to finish a superb Easter Day at Camping Krk
(If you'd like to find out more about the actual campsite, check in again for tomorrow's blog post for pictures and information on the campsite & it's facilities)
