Arriving from the snow of Alsace to the spring sunshine of Luxembourg, we'd been a little surprised to see such a busy Europacamping Nommerlayen campsite. Full of Dutch caravans and motorhomes... But when we realised we had the opportunity to join in the campsite celebrations for the yearly celebration too mark King Willem Alexander's birthday ('KingsDay or Koningsdag'....). It just seemed the perfect time to add a new educational experience following recent visits to interesting places like Venice or Pula, Croatia.
Does your family love to explore new cities too? Need to escape for a few days? Want to compare weekend breaks to top cities such as Bordeaux, Dubrovnik or Copenhagen? Well, our European Cities Experiences page might be right up your street.... but today's article saw us visit the 'City of Bridges in Venice, Italy. A city renowned for its Venetian glass, lace, art, carnival masks, churches, palaces and public squares....
A new star was born in the camping world over a decade ago: The fifth star! Luxury campsites could be set apart for the quality of their facilities, location & accommodation... So having seen other Leading Campings sites including La Marina (Spain), Turiscampo (Portugal) & Camping Krk Resort (Croatia). We were excited to discover just what made Union Lido, the first ever Italian '5 star' Campsite, as we drove from Croatia to Italy, and the stunning location of Venice.
Our 'Roadschooling' Road Trip really has become an ‘adventure’ in every sense of the word with every day full of surprises as we move from one location to another. Now, everyday brings a new outdoor classroom / playground / family adventure for us to discover together as a family. Just like the fantastic Dinopark in Croatia which proved to be a great addition to our 'History' Roadschooling topics
It's not often you see a piece of ancient history that is as well preserved as the Roman Ampitheatre in Pula. Situated on the Italian facing, southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula, this amazing piece of architecture dates back to the 1st Century BC.....So if you get the chance to see Pula's amphitheatre, we think you'll be amazed by this limestone 'arena' that could hold over 23,000 spectators in its heyday in 27BC. One of the 6 largest 'arenas' left in the world, it stands over 100ft tall, with 15 gates and 'perfumed filled' cisterns in the towers to keep spectators refreshed during the action.
Do you Love Motorhoming? Are you one of those people who love to grab a wetsuit and go Scuba Diving? Well read on, as you might just love another of those Camping Adriatic campsites we've visited this month. Camping Marina near Labin is on the Istrian peninsula opposite our previous campsite at Camping Krk. Just over a 2hrs drive away, this coastline is by all accounts a mecca for diving enthusiasts.... So judging by the rubber suited people who have exited vans today beside or behind us or even emerged at times in front of our motorhome.... this campsite and diving centre is obviously the place to come!
With the spring sunshine hitting Europe, thoughts might just be turning to summer holidays later this year. So if you're looking for the best value 'family motorhome site' in Europe? A place to unplug from daily life whilst the kids are fully entertained? Why not consider taking your family on a camping / motorhoming adventure to one of Europe's 'Leading Campings' sites at Camping Resort Krk in Croatia.
Having experienced some fantastic sights on our European Roadtrip for over 500+ days now, we've also enjoyed celebrating festivals and special days in other countries. Loving the opportunity to see how different cultures/countries celebrate these days (i.e Hallowen in Spain or Bastille Day in France). So having seen how the Italians celebrated Easter last year in Catania, Sicily... we couldn't wait to see what Croatia would have in store for us this year....
Heading north from our sea kayaking and climbing adventures in Split, we've moved northwards up the coastal road (Highway '8') to visit Camping San Marino (part of the Camping Adriatic campsite group) on the island of Rab. Camping San Marino is similar to the Orbitur campsites of Portugal. Almost always great places to stay and you know the quality will be amongst the best of on offer across Croatia (just like we'd seen at Camping Solitudo in Dubrovnik earlier this month)
"Life's a challenge... you face it front on and accept the bumps/bruises or you just let it wash over you and watch from the sidelines"
Great advice we once got from a special friend, and it means we vowed to take every possible challenge as long as we feel it will benefit us (as a family) or help challenge the girls. So what better way to prove this than with another climbing adventure, this time with 'Red Adventures' in the Croatian city of Split
Looking for a family adventure this summer with your kids? Something for everyone to enjoy? Yet is safe but offers a little challenge too? So why not see what Split in Croatia has to offer on their combined Sea Kayaking & Cliff Jumping Adventure with Red Adventures....
The terraced sea-view pitches at Camping Nevio can be found on the peninsula of land that reaches out to Korčula. Undeniably one of the best we've seen in Croatia. Flanked by steep mountains, the crystal clear water only adds to the staggeringly beautiful view over a sweeping bay full of small islands. Add to that a private beach, sports facilities and some truly fabulous sunsets.... It really is a 'picture perfect' destination that's great for kids too!
Croatia's stunning coastline has more than 1,000 islands and islets, so it's no surprise, then, that there's a little something for everyone. Whether you're looking for history, culture or watersports, fresh seafood, or some of the most stunningly clear water in the world, you'll be able to find it in one idyllic trip to the Croatian Island of Korčula. An island easily reached by a short 'walk on' passenger ferry from the stunning campsite in Orebić for less than £10 (Read more on our stay at Camping Nevio here)
In truth, there's no better way to show that you love a place... than to return almost a year to the day... Not to somewhere close by, but to exactly where your family created some very special memories in Dubrovnik... A city that has completed captivated us! But as ever, it's where you rest your head at night that sometimes matters as much as the activities on offer in the city.... so we thought'd we'd show you where Camping Solitudo is with this short 'Drone Video Clip' (in partnership with 'Aussies on Tour')
Ever considered Sea Kayaking? If you're exploring Dubrovnik with a Family soon, maybe it's time to give Sea Kayaking a go? We're hoping we can reassure you that it's suitable for those with and without previous sea kayaking experience. So imagine seeing Dubrovnik's Walls on those crystal clear waters or visiting those secret places only accessible by sea kayak.... a real family adventure! And if all that doesn't convince you, then why not check out our short video below (in partnership with drone videographers 'Aussies on Tour')
So What's an Escape Room? Well, Dubrovnik's got a new attraction for 2017. An interactive 'Game of Thrones' based game where participants are locked inside a themed room to crack codes, solve puzzles and engineer an escape within 60 minutes.
Ok, for those that have never been..... add it to your list! You're gonna love it! For those that have been, you'll know that Split has a city centre unlike any other in Europe...
Built around the Roman Emperor Diocletian's Imperial Palace... it's not quite as majestic now as it would have been then... but it's got an amazing, electric atmosphere... the whole city centre literally hums with excitement due to the 3,000 residents who still live and work inside the ruined palace... So what's it like for kids? And whats more, what's it like on a budget?
To say she's a lucky girl is an understatement, as there were so many birthday pictures we couldn't get them all into our blog article about 'Birthdays, Treasure Hunts & Snorkelling at Trogir'.... But we've now headed off to enjoy Split and a brief stay at the impressive Camping Stobreč... Yet another great beach side campsite with plenty of facilities to occupy the kids!
If you've never heard ofTrogir... we'd go as far as to say it's one of the best 'hidden gems' of the Mediterranean... It's UNESCO recognised as a world heritage site and sits on its own island. With bridges linking it to both the mainland and the smaller island of Čiovo which includes our stopover destination at Camping Rozac.
Here's one from our new feed on our Instagram Account - Top 100 Travel Tips from Across Europe (click here to find it) Here's our 🇭🇷 Travel Tip #59 🇭🇷 on where to find a spectacular roadtrip in Croatia this summer... If you love finding stunning new harbours, coves or 'city islands' around every corner... Why not check out what Highway 8 has to offer in Croatia. Running the length of the Adriatic Coastline...
For those who've visited Croatia... you'll have probably visited the famous Plitvice Lakes? But if you're visiting again soon, don't discount the idea of spending a few days in Krka National Park.... maybe even swim under it's famous waterfalls if you dare?
Some say it might just be the best European National Park you've never heard of.....and if you're heading for Split then it really is a very easy daytrip or perhaps even combine it with one of our other favourite places on the Adriatic coastline, the historic island of Trogir.
