Motorhoming in Sicily | Heading west to San Vito Lo Capo

With the Sirocco winds closing in… todays seemed a busy day from start to finish.. a dash to get onto the San Vito Lo Capo peninsula before the winds hit too hard!!! But as ever if you want to find out more about our Motorhoming Adventures in Sicily….. just jump on in to find out plenty of tips, advice and first hand experiences

They weren’t joking when they said it was going to be a tough day on the forecast… winds touching 100kph swept across the island with saharan dust added in for good measure… Treacherous conditions to drive over bridges with spans of 1,300+m…. edge of the seat stuff to be honest… not to be repeated!!! Far worse than the conditions we faced in Scotland and as good as the Adria is, not one to repeated!!!
Thankfully the first part was fine, with great conditions overhead, we headed west past the Norman Cathedral in Cefalu and onto Monreale and it’s cathedral (famed for a historic link to Thomas Becket & Canterbury..). We remarked enroute that Sicily seems an island made up of a 100 Gibraltars and to some extent its true… great peaks rise out of nowhere, with small settlements clinging to their necks like scarfs on kids in a winter playground… sometimes wrapped tightly, sometimes sprawled lazily around the neck of the rock….
[drocap]A[/dropcap] quick stop to add necessary food to the paltry larder on board – all Sicilian where possible… goats and sheep cheese for the next few days… will test the constitution…. and onto Palmero…And past Palmero……….. I’m afraid I’d love to tell you about the small windy streets with their hidden gems including small art galleries and mini-churches… but since it was one big traffic jam and a Saharan storm on the way…. we declined the opportunity and passed on… past Monreale and it’s cathedral and onto the NW tip of Sicily…

There’s Something special about their food

Aspot famed for its rock climbing (hence the numerous marble/limestone quarries) and a wonderful settlement called Erice – perched on a a mountain overlooking Trapani…. bike ride if the store relents perhaps too….. Pretty scary night to be honest as we batten down the hatches (literally)… kids/adults might sleep in the same bed tonight…. wish us luck!!!!
