Motorhoming in Croatia | Seeing another side of campsite life at Baška

If the Croatian Adriatic has an increasing reputation for mixing Mediterranean tradition with modern chic, then it’s arguably on the southern Dalmatian islands, but you’ll find  a more rugged honest landscape if you head towards Baška on the northernmost island of Krk (close to Rijeka

The Dalmatian Coastline is a narrow belt along the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, stretching from the island of Rab in the north to the Bay of Kotor in the south… but just above this is the island of Krk which not only contains ‘Camping Zabalaće‘ but also the 5-star ‘Camping Krk Resort
From the moment we were met at reception by smiling faces, we knew we’d enjoy Baška. Offered the chance to get involved with village life at one of the ‘Lamb & Cheese Days‘. These promise a ‘taste of the traditional’ salt lambs or the fantastic local cheeses…. Once that’s been walked off on one of the numerous walking trails that lead off from the campsite into the craggy landscapes (see here for a copy of the map)… it’s time to explore the longest beach in Croatia (over 1,800m in length)
If you time your visit right, you can see the impressive local church that overlooks the entire bay (Crkva Sv Ivan), head down into the bay to see what the local spear-fishermen have caught for the beachside restaurants evening menu… before finding a little place to enjoy the view of the islands and mountains that surround this campsite. Mountain sides filled with aromatic herbs such as wormwood, sage, thyme and milfoil….

Every campsite should have Something special

In truth, Camping Zabalaće will never compare to it’s nearby neighbour (Camping Krk Resort) when comparing just its facilities… but they’re clearly trying to invest heavily with a new ‘Central Market’, ‘Sky Bar’ and Excursions Office…. It’s certainly going to improve the current campsite with over 75 new mobile homes also added to the site. Having seen these mobile homes from afar since we started our European Adventure, we’ve never ventured inside one… but today that changed as we grabbed the chance to see why they’ve become so popular
So here’s one below for those families who don’t have motorhomes, but fancy grabbing a slice of the action… Allowed access to the entire site’s facilities, they appear to be well furnished inside, comfortable and easily somewhere we could spend a week given half the chance. They’re no Bluestone Wales timber lodge, but we’re still fans!
Add in a welcoming, enthusiastic staff in their gleaming new reception area plus access to the nearby (100m away) hotel pool complete with spa… it’s definitely a campsite on the up! But we’d return just for that view below…. plus the ‘free’ enjoyment from a decent family hikefollowed by a ‘picnic with a view’ or even a chance to grab the bikes and head up one of the trails!
