Luxembourg | Family Hike Adventure from EuropaCamping Nommerlayen

Luxembourg | Family Hike Adventure from EuropaCamping Nommerlayen

If you also love combining family campsite holidays with some healthy outdoor adventure? … Perhaps you’re kids would love the hike, scramble and climb to the tops of rocks just outside Europacamping Nommerlayen?… Maybe if you’re feeling adventurous you could even challenge yourself to navigate along the narrow ledges or up through natural staircases or gaps in rocks in the harder parts…. Either way, it’s an enjoyable walk whatever you choose and certainly suitable for all ages as you can see below.

Luxembourg itself is a small European country, surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany. Our journey yesterday north through Baden Baden before joining the Moselle river valley in the southeast. But head further north and you’ll meet the dense Ardennes forest and nature parks of the north or the rocky gorges of the Mullerthal region in the east.
The circular walk around the small village of Nommern even makes it’s way into ‘Visit Luxembourg’s favourite hikes (see here) and can be started directly from this Leading Campings campsite (next to pitch 168 if it helps…). There are over 5 different hikes of varying lengths and difficulties from the campsite through the local countryside (see here)
Having been brought up in both Suffolk and North Yorkshire, both girls are keen hikers and love to explore when we head out on our journeys across Europe. Sometimes they need full on hiking gear (like Mt Etna), other times it’s just a case of taking waterproofs like Gorge du Verdon… But today was fun due to it’s close proximity to the campsite, so Lottie even managed the walk in a dress!!!!
The route is well marked with easy ‘blue triangle’ route markers with the trail mostly in the forest with aplenty of rock steps rather than a simply plain ‘forest’ trail so your legs definitely get a good workout. You shouldn’t have any difficulties in finding the way up as there is basically only one route although the circular walk can be extended to take in other local highlights like Beaufort.
Having enjoyed the early summer sunshine, we’d taken nearly 2hr 30mins to complete the walk as the girls loved a chance to play in the rocky caves and gorges…  Grabbing the chance to experiment with making their own walking sticks for themselves and their grandparents.
It’s the type of hike that can be completed in 2hrs and provides another reason to visit this well equipped campsite. With the girls happily enjoying the swimming pool or excellent array of climbing or zip wires on site, we could easily have stayed in the campsite… but Luxembourg just demands to be explored. It’s such a hidden gem of a country. Less flat than Belgium, it offers a real variety that reminded us of the Ardennes visit from last year’s ‘Taste of France’ adventures.
But we’d certainly worked up a healthy appetite, so we headed for the bar/restauarnt to grab a taste of Luxembourg food and a  chance for the girls to tuck into the special dessert (the Nommerlayen Surprise!) Tomorrow sees us hopefully tackle another ‘City Experience’ in the capital city Luxembourg…(only a quick 30mins by train from the nearby station at Cruchten)
