On holiday in Alicante and your children like animals? Then Rio Safari might just be the place to visit..

Situated just outside the main holiday base of Alicante are fantastic places like La Marina, Santa Polla and Elche… all with fine beaches and some superb places to entertain your children… so we headed to see just what the Rio Safari  Elche was like for young children. Having travelled across Spain for several months now we’re getting quite a collection of places to see so if you fancy some travel ideas… maybe this ‘Spain Travel Inspiration‘ page might help you and your family?

Having seen the fantastic Bioparc recently at Valencia, we were intrigued to see how this would compare to what is after all one of Europe’s best ‘city zoo / bioparcs’…. but any thoughts of comparisons were well and truly dismissed after yesterday’s unforgettable opportunity to swim with sea lions… an amazing charitable arm of the Rio Safari Zoo which helps children who might benefit from animal assisted therapy
But if the swimming with sea lions was a brilliant aquatic experience, both girls loved the interactivity of the daily shows… we managed to see the sea lions, parrots and a ‘birds of prey’ demonstration… each offering the girls a chance to get involved (feeding a warthog in one and a chance to hold a bird of prey in another)….there was also time to grab a ride on the ‘safari’ train that pulls you through the various areas of the park
It’s hard to pinpoint the girls favourite area at Rio Safari… the savannah offered amazing glimpses of the white lions that seemed to be happy enjoying the late November sun… whilst the various monkey/chimpanzee /orangutang worlds provided fantastic opportunities to see the playfulness of the youngsters…
If you’re looking for a chance to see a wide range of animals alongside a chance to see just how positive an impact animals can have on children with varying levels of disability.. then Rio Safari might just prove a winner with your family… we certainly loved every minute of a very full day here (10am-5pm)
