Crossing the Scottish Borders back into England… Hadrian’s Wall
After a work morning, with both girls hard at work on their travel journals… we ventured outside to check the facilities at the small but well organised Melrose campsite (Caravan Club). The poor site had taken a battering due to the heavy rainfall overnight… so loud that it certainly made for some overnight concerns… but the Adria was in fine fettle, perhaps better than some on the site who were utterly drenched and flooded in.
With some trepidation, we headed out towards Jedburgh on the way to our destination – Hadrian’s Wall…. But the rainfall had taken a heavier toll here and poor Jedburgh was under water…. the locals were great and helped move motorists towards open roads but the detour was lengthy!!! The 1hr journey turned into a 4hr journey via Coldstream, Rothbury. With flooded roads at every turn it was so sad to see this poor area get hit again so soon after their last bout!
Sadly the detour meant that we were too late for the Hadrian’s Wall museum but we all enjoyed a decent hike out to walk the perimeter of the old Roman Fort and then a chance to ‘walk the wall’… the girls loved the idea of history ‘at first hand’ and we could barely silence them on the lengthy walk back to the van…
So back into the van for some pasta and then another 2hrs plus down to York…
Rutland awaits tomorrow….
