SO WHY DO WE BELIEVE IT IS IMPORTANT?

Mathematics is a key skill that is required for everyday life. The simplest form of mathematics, namely addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are needed for basic independent living from shopping to budgeting to currency exchange. Further logic/problem solving is fast becoming an everyday part of real life. Data analysis and links to Science subjects inc geography all require good numeracy ability. Whilst simpler things like administering medicines or measuring the quantities required for cooking are all practical applications of numeracy/mathematics

Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. & Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater.

Albert Einstein

WHAT ARE WE HOPING TO ACHIEVE?

Ensuring our children gain the functional numeracy skills to make their way in the modern world whilst encouraging a love of numbers and problem solving

HOW DO WE APPROACH IT?

Differing from the other subjects taught, we have prioritised the learning of literacy skills, mathematics and languages on a daily basis. Both girls complete a series of daily numeracy exercises via the app (Doodle Maths) and are encouraged to participate fully in our household budgeting (both girls have roles for recording daily expenditure in our spreadsheets/accounting). Further numeracy opportunities are found with the Doodle Tables app. To try and ensure it doesn't become too 'work specific' both girls are encouraged to use fun family games such as Monopoly which also further reinforce their numeracy ability. Or the girls both love the fantastic 'Big Brain Academy' that seems to be permanently on in our motorhome... (Further workbooks are taken to to support individual areas that sometimes require extra efforts)

NUMERACY
  • Using Doodle Maths, we try to complete two short 9-10 question tests per day...
  • There is an additional 'New this Week' in which new topics are introduced and learnt
  • The Doodle Pad (within App) allows both girls to note down working so that we can check it
  • Both girls collect their stars per exercise, this si then collated into a weekly email report and a chance to compare their progress against the National Curriculum levels
Torre del Sol, Spain
PROBLEM SOLVING
  • Using the Lisbon 'Escape Room' to aid the learning of maths proved a brilliant chance to see both girls wrestle with complex patterns and find solutions to the numeracy issues
  • Following the successful Lisbon opportunity, both girls were desperate to try again in an Escape Room in Munich. This proved a harder test and certainly required some quick multiplication, geometry and lateral thinking (alongside the numeracy, sensory tests)
Lisbon, Portugal & Munich, Germany
PROBLEM SOLVING

PROBLEM SOLVING & NUMERACY
  • Developing on the work done by Doodle Maths, creating opportunities to problem solve can be hard, but the purpose built Chateau d'engines offers just that
  • 27 riddles and mathematical puzzles all set to an interesting pirate adventure around the Chateaus gardens
