Over the hills to Spain…. leaving Leucate for the Costa Brava

Today started well after an enjoyable bike ride to get the morning croissants. The lagoon was a sight to behold and the salty sea air must have been responsible for the hearty appetite shown by all!!
After breakfast, and with the van readied for departure, we headed up the hill to an ancient citadel and a chance to see the views. It was a full 360 degree view that simply went on for miles….. After a chance for some climbing and a chance to view the grottos…. we headed back to the lagoon and lunch.
After lunch we headed south to the border, after numerous lengthy climbs over the mountains we arrived at an abandoned border post (reminiscent of a cold war East Germany…) and we had arrived…. Spain / Espagne! The climbs and treacherous mountain road continued unabated, with some scintillating views of the national parks as we headed towards Cadaques. It really was worth every minute of the 5hr drive……
Sadly the Camping Cadaques site was closed (much to our disgust as our book suggested otherwise)…. so we headed back past the olive trees to Fortia and onto a superb Aire… kindly opened after our arrival at 9pm! Dinner and bed followed with much discussion about tomorrow….
Perhaps onwards to Barcelona in the morning….. or will we chance our arm and try one of the Costa Brava coves nearby, or perhaps the Salvador Dali museum at Figueres…… I guess it will just depend on what time we surface tomorrow….????
